TUM Campus Straubing students win Global Student Challenge 2021 in supply chain management
The winner of the 2021 edition of the Global Student Challenge in supply chain management is a student team from the Technical University of Munich. Magdalena Huber, Polina Ivanova, Enrico Kaschak, and Emilia Wengorz as the team “Bavarian Saftladen” competed against 47 other student teams from 33 different universities and 17 countries worldwide. After an intense and very close final from May 2-8, they took a phenomenal first place and can now call themselves world champions of the Global Student Challenge 2021.
The EURO Working Group (EWG) Retail Operations: Food Waste Management – Second Digital Meeting
The second digital meeting of the EWG Retail Ops took place on March 26th, 2021, and attracted 57 participants, from U.S., Asia and Europe, and was organized by Sandra Transchel (Kuehne Logistics University) and Alexander Huebner (Technical University Munich).
New publication “Cost-optimal truck-and-robot routing for last-mile delivery” accepted by Networks
Our latest research work on last-mile delivery with trucks and robots was accepted for publication in Networks. It proposes a routing algorithm and shows the concept’s potential to reduce logistics costs and emissions by more than 50% compared to current delivery trucks.
30. QBWL (digital) Workshop hosted by the Chair of Supply and Value Chain Management
This year’s Quantitative BWL (QBWL) workshop was hosted on 8 March 2021 by the Chair of Supply and Value Chain Management at TUM Campus Straubing. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the workshop was hosted in a virtual format.

Omnichannel is a must-have in retail business. If you want to survive as a retailer, you have to be present on all channels.” Hübner knows his way around, he has been investigating the topic for years. His research focus is on the design of sustainable supply chains, where he holds the Chair of Supply and Value Chain Management at the University’s Straubing Campus as a responsible expert. In the past, the topic of omnichannel was mainly a source of concern for traditional retailers. But the major E-Commerce platforms shook up an entire industry sector. “Today, many small retailers also have their own web platform to serve their customers”, explains Hübner.
New publication “Optimizing routing and delivery patterns with multi-compartment vehicles” accepted at EJOR
Our research work combining the fields of routing with multi-compartment vehicles and periodic delivery was accepted for publication in the European Journal of Operational Research (VHB-Jourqual: A). Article “Multi-compartment vehicle routing problems: state-of-the-art, modeling framework and future directions” accepted at EJOR
Second publication in November: Our recent survey on Mulit-Compartment Vehicle Routing Problems was accepted for publication in the European Journal of Operational Research (VHB: A). We are very proud that our literature review on this important routing problem will be available soon. A special thank goes to our collaborators Tino Henke and Gerhard Wäscher from the Otto-von-Goericke-University Magdeburg. It has been a great pleasure to work with them.
Article “Shelf space dimensioning and product allocation in retail stores” accepted at European Journal of Operational Research
We are happy to announce that our article “Shelf space dimensioning and product allocation in retail stores” was accepted for publication in the European Journal of Operational Research (VHB: A).
Retail shelves are adjustable by varying the number of shelf boards as well as the height and depth of each shelf board. Shelf planners adjust the boards accordingly at regular intervals when they create the shelf plans and allocate products. Current shelf planning models assume given shelf configurations and allocate only products. However, the dimensioning of a shelf segment and product allocation are interdependent. For instance, the height of one segment may be reduced if only small products are allocated or products cannot be stacked.
Team “Saftladen” takes win in this semester’s digital Supply Chain Business Game
After six rounds of this year’s Supply Chain Business Game, the 2020 champion was decided. Team “Saftladen”, consisting of Magdalena Huber, Polina Ivanova, Emilia Wengorz und Enrico Kaschak finished with the highest ROI of 10.89 and lead their own Orange Juice Production Company to a successful operational turnaround.
