Welcome to the 1st “Future of Retail Operations” Workshop, organized at TU Munich Campus Heilbronn on October 24-26, 2018. The workshop is an exclusive forum for professionals and academics from leading firms and universities of the world and focuses on operations management in the retail industry.
Participants will learn from speakers via presentations and engage in breakout sessions that focus on future topics in retail operations. The workshop will include discussions on latest research, industry practices and approaches, business and engineering perspectives, latest trends and challenges.
In the workshop, participants will identify and discuss relevant future topics in Retail SCM and Retail Operations and potential practical and research approaches.

Over the course of two days, they discussed innovations in retail, the effects of digitization, opportunities of advanced analytics, and key competencies needed in the future to operate successfully as a retailer.

Leading international scientists and industry experts came together on October 24-26 for the “Future of Retail Operations” workshop at the recently opened TUM Campus Heilbronn.
Organized by Prof. Dr. Alexander Hübner (Chair of Supply and Value Chain Management, TUM Campus Straubing) and Prof. Dr. Stefan Minner (Chair of Logistics and Supply Chain Management, TUM School of Management), the participants discussed latest research, new industry practices, and upcoming trends and innovations in retail operations such as omni-channel operations, operations-marketing interfaces, distribution concepts, and retail analytics. The goal of the workshop was to identify open spots and exciting new research fields.
The participant list covered the global thought leaders in retail operations and boasted a high density of experts in operations management, representing leading international universities such as University of Dallas, Wharton School, Singapore Management University, Koc University, IESE Barcelona or Stockholm University. Together with industry executives from Kaufland, Lidl, Lekkerland, and McKinsey & Company, participants followed the guiding questions:
- What are the key topics in Retail Operations 2025?
- How will ongoing digitalization change channel management, distribution concepts and store operations?
- What will be key capabilities in retail analytics and execution?
The mix of leading research and hands-on industry practice in the room enabled impulse lectures with high level of interaction and inspiring breakout discussions. All participants left with new ideas for research topics, cooperations, and an even stronger network. Auf Einladung von Prof. Dr. Alexander Hübner (Chair of Supply and Value Chain Management, TUM Campus Straubing) und Prof. Dr. Stefan Minner (Chair of Logistics and Supply Chain Management, TUM School of Management) diskutierten die Teilnehmer aktuelle Forschungsthemen, neue Industrieverfahren, zukünftige Trends und Innovationen im Bereich von Retail Operations, darunter Omni-channel Operations, Operations Marketing Oberflächen, Lieferkonzepte und Analytics. Ziel des Workshops war es, offene Forschungsbereiche zu identifizieren und zu konkretisieren.
Dabei umfasste die Teilnehmerliste internationale Meinungsführer im Bereich Retail Operations sowie eine hohe Dichte anerkannter Experten in Operations Management, vertreten waren unter anderem Forscher der University of Dallas, Wharton School, Singapore Management University, Koc University, IESE Barcelona und der Stockholm University.
